Before and After and After again!

I posted the enhanced version of today’s ‘before and after’ image on my photo-blogand received the following comment: “good portrait wud have added much more character had it been converted into b&w…”So naturally, I had to give a try.

The first image was produced by a Beta Version of ACDSee Pro. I had just downloaded it to test it as a productivity tool for the wedding I had just finished shooting. It has a decent set of tools for manipulating images and allows for batch manipulation. I think I like it.

Any way, I was using the sharpening tool, and tried an experiment I had seen demonstrated. I liked the result so much I didn’t even think of trying any thing else.

My kids think that the original image has the look of Santa. The second one they think looks like a wizard. I think the B&W version allows for the effects of the extreme sharpening to come through but brings the image back to reality. In the B&W version the man looks like a man.

7/7/07 – I’ve heard about this day of weddings even before my return to photography. What a great day to shoot my first wedding in a half a dozen years!

I am just getting back into the swing of things. I have a couple of weddings and engagement shoots planned for later this summer, but this one came out of the blue. Christine called my wife on an unrelated subject, and just happened to ask if we had a camera. Their wedding was rushed and they were not able to find a photographer, do you know who could take some pictures? “Barry is a photographer! He could do it.” After giving Christine a link to my photoblog – to which she responded, “He really is a photographer!” – I was booked.

A week later and I was photographing their wedding.

It was a small, intimate wedding held in Christine’s large, back yard. I’m not sure if she had an alternative location, but the weather held out. If any thing, it was too nice. Hot and sticky.

After the ceremony, we did a quick formal shooting in a little clearing in the back. We had planned a trip to Kakabeka Falls, but both Christine and Bruce wanted to change into something cooler.

The original exposure of this image was on the dark side. There was no pixels in the top third of the historgram. The only peek in the historgram was hugging the blacks.

Some photoshop work: opened up the shadows, some curves, added some hightlights on subject and subject’s pack, finally I added some vignette.
